In early January, 2012 the car benefitted from a complete engine overhaul. The 383 small block chevy engine received JE pistons, a SCAT crank, Crower rods and AFR cylinder heads giving the car a respectable 12.5:1 compression ratio and a little over 600 bhp. Solid roller cams and roller rockers were used to handle the added power.

An Edlebrock intake manifold equipped with a Holley double pumper 4-bbl carburetor provide the fuel. A custom 3” exhaust system lets it all breathe properly. All system are monitored by a full compliment of racing gauges.

A Tilton 7” dual disc clutch and hydraulic throw-out bearing connect the Tex Racing NASCAR 4-speed transmission to the engine and 4:11 Posi Corvette rear end to make the most efficient use of the 600+ hp. Cooling is provided via an FSR radiator and electric fan. Transmission gear ratios: 1st-2.19:1, 2nd-1.73:1, 3rd1.54:1 & 4th 1.0.

Stopping is provided via Baer 13” competition disc brakes with dual Tilton master cylinders and dash mounted brake balance adjustment. Custom 16”X12” rims are fitted with Hoosier Road Racing Slicks. Suspension courtesy of Penske racing shocks front and rear and Eibach competition springs.

Many spare parts as well as records and receipts, two extra sets of wheels and a brand new set of Hoosier tires accompany the car.

The C2 Corvette was manufactured by General Motors from the 1963 model year to 1967. In 1966 27,720 Corvettes were produced. With a base price of $4,084.00, the Sting Ray was very popular in SCCA racing. In 2004 Sports Car International named the Sting Ray number 5 in the list of Top Cars of the 1960’s. Today the C2 Corvette can be found in SCCA and Vintage racing on a multitude of courses.

Corvette’s designers and engineers – Ed Cole, Zora Arkus-Duntov, Bill Mitchell, and others knew that after 10 years in its basic form, albeit much improved, it was time to move on. By decade’s end, the machinery would be put into motion to fashion a fitting successor to debut for the 1963 model year. After years of tinkering with the basic package, Bill Mitchell and his crew would finally break the mold of Harley Earl’s original design once and for all. He would dub the Corvette’s second generation “Sting Ray” after the earlier race car of the same name. The C2 was designed by Larry Shinoda under the direction of GM chief stylist Bill Mitchell. Inspiration was drawn from several sources: the contemporary Jaguar E-Type, one of which Mitchell owned and enjoyed driving frequently; the radical Sting Ray Racer Mitchell designed in 1959 as Chevrolet no longer participated in factory racing; and a Mako shark Mitchell caught while deep-sea fishing. Zora Arkus-Duntov (“father of the Corvette”) disliked the split rear window (which also raised safety concerns due to reduced visibility and it was discontinued in 1964, as were the fake hood vents.

Records for this car date back to 2010 when Rick Perry of El Cajon, CA began an earnest conversion of a street Sting Ray for racing purposes. Much time was spent getting the suspension just right with many handwritten notes documenting the settings used.
